Living with bone-on-bone pain, due to osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, can significantly affect your quality of life. Traditional treatments like medications and injections offer relief for some, while others may seek alternative options to fully manage their symptoms. First, let’s take a closer look at what causes pain in bone-on-bone arthritis. Most of the pain from arthritis is caused by inflammation. As you begin to lose the cartilage in your joints, your bones start to rub on each other. Since bones are not as smooth as cartilage, this creates friction every time they move over each other. This in turn triggers the inflammatory cascade.
Inflammation, or swelling, can show up in the space between the joints or around the outside of the joint. Another place that can swell is the bone itself. This is known as bony edema and this type of pain doesn’t tend to respond well to treatments like pain pills and injections. This is where Regenerative Therapies, such as EMTT and Focused Shockwave, come into play. Previously, I have spoken about the benefits of EMTT; specifically for bone-on-bone arthritis, the EMTT can target this bony edema and push the swelling out, effectively decreasing the pain. Another layer that can be added is Focused Shockwave (FSW). FSW is a non-invasive treatment where shock waves are directed at the affected area to stimulate healing and reduce pain. These shockwaves are high-energy sound waves generated outside the body and transmitted through the skin to the targeted tissue. It promotes tissue regeneration, improves blood flow, and decreases inflammation in the treated area. This can lead to pain relief and improved function over time. The main difference between Radial Shockwave (RSW) and FSW is that FSW is strong enough to heal bone and RSW is not. FSW has shown promise in alleviating pain and improving joint function in individuals with bone-on-bone arthritis. By stimulating tissue repair and modulating pain pathways, FSW offers relief for those who have not responded adequately to other treatments. HouseFit added FSW to its Regenerative Therapy offerings in May and is ready to start treating bone-on-bone conditions The HouseFit Approach Successful treatment of bone-on-bone arthritis requires a multi-layered approach. We apply the best practices from Regenerative Therapy, Physical Therapy, and lifestyle modifications to achieve maximum results for our clients. Here’s an example of how we layer in these approaches to achieve optimal outcomes in clients with knee arthritis.
