Dr. Beth was asked to provide commentary on a new model of aging being introduced to the Physical Therapy Profession. The WAMI-3 is a great educational tool to assist both clinicians and our patients to better understand what constitutes normal aging and what contributes to accelerated aging.

Dr. Beth was on Fox 2 morning news to talk about the Floor Fitness Workshop that teaches adults 55+ alternative methods on how to get up off the floor after a fall. A recent study of adults older than 65 years shows half of those who lie on the floor for more than one hour went on to die within six months, even without a direct injury from the fall.

Tripping seniors could make them steadier on their feet - at least that’s the idea behind ActiveStep, a modified treadmill designed to help seniors and others with risks of falling become more stable on their feet. The first ActiveStep in the Midwest outside of a laboratory is the centerpiece of newly opened business HouseFit, 3809 Lemay Ferry Road, 63125. The ActiveStep was installed Nov. 30, 2018.

Mary Friedman is an active retiree who likes to go hiking and kayaking. She admits only to being in her mid-60s and walks with the confidence of someone who knows she can fudge her age. Beth Templin is trying to trip her up. “I feel like I could bungee jump in this thing,” Friedman jokes on a recent afternoon. She’s the guinea pig for a new fall-prevention system called the ActiveStep Balance Trainer. Templin, a geriatric physical therapist, has just had the machine installed at HouseFit, the senior wellness center she owns in south St. Louis County.

I was never, I mean never ever going to start my own practice. I had no dreams of being a business owner. In fact, I felt the exact opposite. I loved the idea of working for a large company with great benefits and lots of job security. I thought people in my graduating class who were excited about the possibility of owning their own clinic were a little crazy. I had no interest in it whatsoever.

As a physical therapist who specializes in promoting fitness and wellness for older adults, I find that one of the biggest barriers to getting people to exercise regularly is false beliefs about aging and exercise. I spend much of my time busting myths of aging and explaining to people that they truly do have control over their aging path and don’t have to accept the downhill slide of aging as inevitable.
