Recently we’ve been taught that inflammation is something bad, something we should eliminate as quickly as possible. But the truth is, your body actually needs inflammation to heal. In fact, inflammation is a lot like cholesterol.
Not all cholesterol is harmful. Your body needs HDL, the “good” cholesterol, to function properly, while too much LDL can create damage over time. Inflammation works the same way. Some inflammation is protective and necessary. The problem occurs when inflammation becomes chronic and never shuts off.
Acute inflammation is your body’s natural healing response. If you twist your ankle, strain your shoulder, or cut your finger, your body immediately sends healing chemicals and immune cells to the injured area. That swelling, warmth, and tender-ness? Those are signs your body is trying to repair itself. At the cellular level, immune cells rush into the area to clean up damaged tissue and begin rebuilding. Once the repair process is complete, inflammation decreases and the tissue returns to normal. This is the kind of inflammation we want. Research now shows that short-term inflammation is essential for proper tissue healing and recovery. Without it, the body cannot fully repair itself. Chronic inflammation is very different. Instead of shutting down after healing is complete, the inflammatory response stays active. It’s like the body’s alarm system gets stuck in the “ON” position. Over time, this ongoing inflammation slowly damages tissues and contributes to:
As inflammation becomes chronic, the healing process becomes disorganized. Blood flow decreases. Oxygen delivery drops. Scar tissue and fibrosis begin developing instead of healthy tissue. Even the nervous system changes. Pain signals become amplified and easier to trigger. Eventually, normal movement itself may become painful. This is why chronic pain often feels very different from a fresh injury. The body keeps attempting repair, but the healing process becomes inefficient and incomplete. I hear this every day from clients: “I just don’t bounce back like I used to.” This is where regenerative therapies like EMTT and Shockwave Therapy can be incredibly helpful. Rather than simply masking symptoms, these treatments help influence the body’s healing cascade at the cellular level. Shockwave Therapy helps improve circulation, reduce scar tissue, and stimulate healing-focused repair cells. EMTT helps improve cellular energy production, reduce chronic inflammatory stress, and support tissue regeneration. Together, they help encourage the body to move out of chronic pain and inflammation and back into healthy healing. This is why many of our clients say: “I finally feel like my body is healing.” At HouseFit, we specialize in helping aging adults overcome pain, stiffness, and mobility limitations using a whole-body approach to healing and healthy aging. If you’ve been dealing with pain that never fully seems to improve, chronic inflammation may be playing a larger role than you realize. The good news is that your body still has the ability to heal, sometimes it simply needs help restarting the process. If you’d like to learn whether regenerative therapies may be right for you, contact us today to schedule your Free Consultation at 314-939-1377. Written By: Dr. Beth Templin
